About this project

Beacon Coverage GIS is an interactive propagation and range mapping tool for VHF, UHF and microwave amateur radio beacons, built for the IARU-R1 community. It computes physical radio-horizon coverage, link budgets, terrain profiles and Fresnel zones from live beacon telemetry, and lets operators report real-time reception ("Live Openings") to build a crowdsourced picture of current propagation conditions.

Beacon telemetry and static metadata (antenna, power, location) are aggregated live via the IARU-R1 API (iaru.hamradio.pl), built and maintained by Dawid, SQ6EMM. The sections below list exactly where that data comes from, fetched live from IARU-R1's own diagnostic endpoints.

Where available, clicking a beacon also loads its real modeled coverage - rendered by Dawid from actual terrain data - in place of the simplified geometric estimate. Loaded on demand for the beacon you select; look for the "REAL COVERAGE" badge.
